Body of Knowledge

Body of Knowledge Program Studi Doktor
Environmental Engineering

  3. Coursework and research activities that guide program participants toward an understanding of the state of the art in their research area, provide fundamental concepts within their field of research, and offer a broad perspective fitting for a doctorate.

Currently, Environmental Engineering ITB as an Engineering discipline primarily operates in:

  • Provision of safe and adequate water supply for human activities in terms of quality, quantity, and continuity.
  • Control of potential disease transmission and environmental health management, including environmental health and safety (EHS).
  • Pollution control initiatives addressing waste from human activities—from the pollution source to waste generation—utilizing clean technology approaches (pollution prevention) and waste recycling.
  • Liquid, gaseous, and solid waste control and management technologies to mitigate pollution impacts on environmental media: soil, water (including marine environments), and air, including the application and development of relevant biotechnology.
  • Conveyance of waste and effluents, including stormwater runoff, to minimize environmental disruption and ensure proper management.
  • Conservation of water resources, extensible to broader natural resource conservation.
  • Environmental management through environmental management system (EMS) frameworks.
  • Assessment of adverse impacts arising from environmental pollution, incorporating risk assessment approaches encompassing both health risk assessment and ecological risk assessment.

Challenges Faced

Educational and Professional Challenges in
Environmental Engineering

The challenges for the next 10 years in the field of Environmental Engineering, referencing various sources, literature, and discussions with stakeholders—especially the Environmental Engineering ITB advisory board—include:

  1. Sustainability and sustainable development
  2. Climate change
  3. Globalization
  4. UN Millennium Development Goals (water, sanitation, and public health)
  5. Energy and environment, transitioning away from energy versus environment
  6. Food safety and security
  7. Professional certification

The national accreditation body adhered to by the Environmental Engineering Study Program is independently organized by the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) of Indonesia. Internationally, the referenced accreditation body is the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), based in the United States. The affiliated national professional organization is the Indonesian Society of Sanitary and Environmental Engineers (IATPI), while the international benchmark is the American Academy of Environmental Engineers (AAEE).

The objectives of the Doctoral Education Program in Environmental Engineering basically refer to the objectives of the ITB doctoral education program, namely a nurturing process to cultivate the ability to:

  1. Develop new or original concepts in science and technology and understand the state of the art in the chosen field of specialization,
  2. Possess the ability to manage, lead, and develop research programs independently,
  3. Understand ethics and morals in the development of science and technology,
  4. Produce scientific works that reflect specialized expertise and make original contributions to their field of study,
  5. Possess the ability to apply interdisciplinary approaches when working in their field of expertise,
  6. Conduct knowledge transfer and communicate it to the surrounding scientific community.

In accordance with Presidential Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia No. 82 of 2012 concerning the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI), doctoral program graduates possess at least qualifications equivalent to Level 9, namely:

  1. Capable of developing new knowledge, technology, and/or art within their scientific field or professional practice through research, producing creative, original, and tested works.
  2. Capable of solving science, technology, and/or art problems within their scientific field through interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary approaches.
  3. Capable of managing, leading, and developing research and development that is beneficial to science and the welfare of humanity, as well as obtaining national and international recognition.

Graduates of the Environmental Engineering Doctoral Program are expected to achieve the following capabilities upon graduating from the study program:

  1. Capable of producing creative, original, and tested works through research using science and technology development approaches in fields related to environmental engineering.
  2. Capable of developing and applying state-of-the-art knowledge and technology in their field of expertise to solve existing environmental problems through independent research.
  3. Capable of making scientific contributions that gain national and international recognition.
