Body of Knowledge
Master's education builds upon undergraduate education and focuses on fostering capabilities in the development or application of knowledge and expertise in Clean Water and Sanitation Infrastructure Management. The mission of this study program is to administer postgraduate education to enhance the quality of human resources through the advancement of science and technology for national prosperity, particularly in the field of Clean Water and Sanitation Infrastructure. Graduates are expected to proficiently handle sanitation and clean water supply challenges professionally and integrate them with sound environmental management practices.
The competencies of the Applied Master's in Environmental Engineering are as follows:
- An ability to develop analytical reviews and research methods concerning policies and professional applications in Environmental Engineering.
- An ability to analyze and interpret research data.
- An ability to design and develop complex infrastructure systems by incorporating Environmental Engineering as a specialized study.
- An ability to collaborate ethically and professionally in multidisciplinary teams to build macro-level infrastructure management frameworks.
Accordingly, the Body of Knowledge (BoK) of the Applied Master's Program in Clean Water and Sanitation Infrastructure Management is as follows:
- Technology in clean water and sanitation infrastructure emphasizing localization, specifically the capability to solve local issues in Indonesia, which can also be expanded to address challenges in developing countries.
- Clean water usage, final waste disposal, and potential disease transmission pathways, particularly in Indonesia and other developing nations.
- General clean water and sanitation management, including understanding infrastructure planning challenges and limitations in developing countries, non-technical factors in planning and implementation, and multidisciplinary linkages to resolve existing issues.
- Implementation of operational principles of appropriate technology for clean water and sanitation, detailed evaluation considering various relevant criteria, and the ability to foster community participation to support seamless development and operational sustainability.
Challenges Faced
Future challenges in the discipline of Environmental Engineering, including the Clean Water and Sanitation Infrastructure Management Study Program, referenced from various sources, literature, and discussions with diverse stakeholders—particularly the ITB Environmental Engineering Advisory Board—encompass the following:
- Improvement and upgrading of clean water and environmental sanitation systems.
- UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG targets for 2015).
- Global demand for environmental infrastructure professionals.
The reference curriculum used for benchmarking was developed based on informal collaboration with IHE Delft, the Netherlands. A similar program curriculum developed by MIT was also taken into consideration in designing this PIAS curriculum. Furthermore, the curriculum incorporates various inputs from governmental and private institutions—such as municipal water utilities (PDAM), the Department of Public Works, local governments, consultants, NGOs, and others—gathered through workshops, national and international seminars, and training sessions in the field of Clean Water and Sanitation Infrastructure.
The national accreditation body adhered to by the Environmental Engineering Study Program is independently organized by the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) of Indonesia. Internationally, the referenced accreditation body is the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), based in the United States. The affiliated national professional organization is the Indonesian Society of Sanitary and Environmental Engineers (IATPI), while the international benchmark is the American Academy of Environmental Engineers (AAEE).

The educational objectives of the applied-oriented Master’s program in the Clean Water and Sanitation Infrastructure Management (PIAS) Study Program fundamentally align with ITB's master’s education goals: equipping graduates with capabilities beyond the undergraduate level, particularly the creative capacity in Environmental Engineering to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to foster innovative community activities grounded in a strong scientific foundation through research-based higher education. In making such decisions, PIAS master’s graduates must be capable of synthesizing insights and drawing conclusions from research activities alongside their depth and breadth of scientific mastery. Consequently, graduates of the PIAS Master's program are expected to be able to:
- Develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes to foster innovative activities within society, grounded in a solid scientific foundation through research-based higher education.
- Enhance capabilities in the field of Clean Water and Sanitation Infrastructure and advance the applied knowledge acquired and mastered at the postgraduate level.
Similar to the Master's Program in Environmental Engineering, in accordance with ABET criteria, the student outcomes for the PIAS Master's Program are as follows:
- “one year of academic study beyond the baccalaureate level” and demonstration that “graduates have an ability to apply master’s level knowledge in a specialized area of engineering related to the program area“.
- Student outcomes are outcomes (a) through (k) in undergraduate degree (lihat kurikulum Program Sarjana TL ITB) plus any additional outcomes that may be articulated by the program. Therefore, the outcomes must be consistent with the required additional “one year of academic study beyond the baccalaureate level” and demonstration that “graduates have an ability to apply master’s level knowledge in a specialized area of engineering related to the program area“.
- A master’s level program is expected to use measurements that relate to the master’s level curriculum for the applicable outcomes in addition to measurements taken from the parts of the curriculum normally associated with a baccalaureate program (undergraduate program).
