ACADEMIC PROGRAM

Body of Knowledge

Body of Knowledge
Water Resources Engineering and Management

Based on Law No. 7 of 2004 concerning Water Resources, Water Resources (SDA) are defined as "water, water sources, and the water potential contained therein," in which water refers to "all water found on, above, or beneath the ground surface, including surface water, groundwater, rainwater, and land-based seawater." As water resources is an inherently multidisciplinary field, the Body of Knowledge (BoK) of the Water Resources Engineering and Management (TPSDA) Undergraduate Study Program must accommodate diverse disciplines required in water resources engineering and management, encompassing:

  1. Engineering
  2. Sistem Informasi, Ekonomi, dan Manajemen
  3. Water Resources and Ecosystems
  4. Society and Culture
  5. Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM)

Sustainable development in the water resources sector represents the core objective to be achieved. The formulated BoK must maintain a well-proportioned blend of academic disciplines to fulfill this goal. Upstream disciplines—specifically Engineering and Ecosystems—should maintain a balanced composition, supported by management aspects involving information systems, social, economic, and cultural factors. Meanwhile, as a downstream discipline, IWRM must encompass adequate components to foster an integrated understanding of water resources. Accordingly, the BoK is structured as presented in the following diagram.

Challenges Faced

Educational and Professional Challenges in
Water Resources Engineering and Management

The Water Resources Engineering and Management (TPSDA) Undergraduate Study Program was developed to serve as a positive driving force in addressing increasingly critical water-related issues. Strategic issues concerning national water challenges include: food security, flood mitigation, sea level rise and tidal flooding (rob), drought, environmental degradation of rivers and lakes, climate change, groundwater table depletion and seawater intrusion, degraded critical land, and renewable energy utilization. In addition to strategic issues, there are governance and management challenges in water resources, such as public participation, coordination in planning and development, multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral collaboration, the role of regional autonomy, as well as the integrated management of administrative territories and Watershed Areas (DAS).

The international benchmarks for accreditation and professional organizations are the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) and the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers (AAWRE). The national accreditation reference is the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT), with the Indonesian Association of Hydraulic Engineers (HATHI) serving as the national professional organization.

The study program aims to achieve four primary objectives:

    1. To serve as a sustainable higher education platform for producing engineering graduates in the field of Water Resources amid globalization, regional autonomy, and privatization/corporatization, while actively engaging with the broader community.
    2. To serve as a sustainable higher education platform for nurturing individuals of independent, noble, disciplined, and resilient character, who demonstrate empathy and actively participate in resolving humanitarian challenges, preserving Indonesia's natural environment, and addressing global issues at large.
    3. To produce engineering graduates equipped with fundamental research abilities and the requisite competencies in designing and understanding water resources infrastructure and facilities.
    4. To produce engineering graduates in Water Resources to fulfill national needs, thereby addressing the professional workforce demands in the water resources sector.

This study program is expected to produce graduates who achieve the following learning outcomes:
