Body of Knowledge
Body of Knowledge
Environmental Engineering
The Body of Knowledge (BoK) of the Environmental Engineering (TL) Study Program is designed to address challenges structured around three outcome categories:
-
Fundamental Outcomes Category
Related to courses in mathematics, natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences. -
Technical Outcomes Category
Related to courses in materials science, mechanics, experimentation, problem identification and solving, engineering design, perspectives on contemporary issues, risk and uncertainty, project management, and areas related to the field of environmental engineering. -
Professional Outcomes Category
Pertaining to coursework covering communication, public policy, business and public administration, globalization, leadership, collaboration, behavior, lifelong learning, professionalism, and ethical responsibility.
ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING STUDY PROGRAM AS AN ENGINEERING DISCIPLINE PRIMARILY FOCUSES ON:
- Provision of safe and adequate water supply for human activities in terms of quality, quantity, and continuity.
- Control of potential disease transmission and environmental health management, including environmental health and safety (EHS).
- Pollution control initiatives addressing waste from human activities—from the pollution source to waste generation—utilizing clean technology approaches (pollution prevention) and waste recycling.
- Liquid, gaseous, and solid waste control and management technologies to mitigate pollution impacts on environmental media: soil, water (including marine environments), and air, including the application and development of relevant biotechnology.
- Conveyance of waste and effluents, including stormwater runoff, to minimize environmental disruption and ensure proper management.
- Conservation of water resources, extensible to broader natural resource conservation.
- Environmental management through environmental management system (EMS) frameworks.
- Pollution control initiatives addressing waste from human activities—from the pollution source to waste generation—utilizing clean technology approaches (pollution prevention) and waste recycling.
- Assessment of adverse impacts arising from environmental pollution, incorporating risk assessment approaches encompassing both health risk assessment and ecological risk assessment.
Challenges Faced
Educational and Professional Challenges in
Environmental Engineering
Future challenges in the discipline of Environmental Engineering—referenced from diverse literature sources and discussions with key stakeholders, particularly the ITB Environmental Engineering Advisory Board—include:
- Sustainability and sustainable development
- Climate change
- Globalization
- UN Millennium Development Goals (water, sanitation, and public health)
- Energy and environment, transitioning away from energy versus environment
- Food safety and security
- Professional certification
Nationally, the accreditation body for the Environmental Engineering Study Program is independently administered by the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) of Indonesia. Internationally, the accreditation agency referenced as a benchmark is the US-based Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The professional organization affiliated at the national level is the Indonesian Society of Sanitary and Environmental Engineers (IATPI), while the international benchmark is the American Association of Environmental Engineers (AAEE).

The Environmental Engineering (TL) Undergraduate Program curriculum is designed to produce graduates with the following profile:
- Possess a solid foundation of knowledge and skills to observe, recognize, and approach problem-solving in the field of Environmental Engineering scientifically and proactively;
- Apply Environmental Engineering principles and adapt to ongoing changes while staying abreast of the latest advancements in the field;
- Demonstrate social, civic, and broader environmental awareness.
As outlined above, in formulating the BoK for the ITB TL Study Program, graduate learning outcomes are grouped into three categories:
-
- Fundamental Outcome Category: Encompasses coursework in mathematics, natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences.
- Technical Outcome Category: Relates to coursework in materials science, mechanics, experimentation, problem identification and solving, engineering design, contemporary issues, risk and uncertainty, project management, and specialized domains within environmental engineering.
- Professional Outcome Category: Relates to coursework in communication, public policy, business-public administration, globalization, leadership, teamwork, professional conduct, lifelong learning, and professional and ethical responsibilities.
Below is the list of outcomes used to determine whether graduates have achieved the educational objectives outlined in the ITB 2013 Environmental Engineering Curriculum. Graduates of the Environmental Engineering Undergraduate Program will possess:
- An ability to identify, formulate, and solve environmental problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics;
- An ability to apply analysis and synthesis to produce engineering designs required for environmental conservation, taking into consideration public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors;
- An ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders involved in water, air, and land environmental issues, as well as the technologies required to address them;
- An ability to apply ethical and professional responsibilities by considering environmental degradation issues and the impact of technology on local, regional, and global environments, including social and economic dimensions;
- An ability to function effectively on a team with leadership to create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives required to manage the environment, mitigate environmental degradation, and enhance conservation;
- An ability to identify problems, develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions in the field of environmental conservation;
- A recognition of the need for continuous learning to enrich, evaluate, integrate, and appropriately apply knowledge in response to evolving environmental challenges.
